Industry Policy and Government Lobbying
The Service Station Association, ‘the voice of the industry’ acts as a lobby group, representing the interests of the industry to Local, State and Commonwealth Government. The SSA’s position is determined by the needs of members. Its activities aim to create an environment that is more conducive to profitable business growth.
Key Services and Benefits
SSA provides advice on industry needs in the areas of:
- Legislative reform
- Occupational health and safety
- Environment
- Education and training
- Industry development
Through its affiliation with the Australian Motor Industry Federation in Canberra, the SSA is able to lobby Government Ministers and Departments, ensure SSA is aware of current events and that the lines of communication are kept open. The SSA is in constant contact with Government authorities and has a well established network of contacts and can thus obtain quick access to the appropriate people in Government. It should also be noted that SSA has an excellent network of contacts in all areas of the media and can raise issues as well as respond to Government activity.
The Service Station Association is a highly credible source of information and the media regularly seeks its opinion on petroleum issues.
Representation of individual member companies
As part of the membership entitlement, the SSA works on behalf of individual member companies that have a problem or need to make a point to any of the three levels of government.
The SSA can assist individual member companies, through the first stage of representation to Government prior to an organisation employing a Government relations specialist. Furthermore, it is well placed to provide professional advice, assist with problem solving and can arrange letters of introduction and contact with appropriate Government representatives.
This is a particularly valuable service for small and medium sized businesses that do not operate their own public affairs departments.

Through the SSA’s web site, www.ssa.org.au members can view recent lobbying activities and other important information. Also available are the latest policy issues and information on relevant legislation.
