Phasing Out Unleaded Petrol
The Federal Government has released a discussion paper with the objective of improving the quality standards of fuel sold in Australia. Currently, Australian fuel quality is the poorest of all OECD countries.
Standard changes under consideration include lowering sulphur content. This would involve substantial capital investment changes at Australia's refineries and require a 5 year lead time to complete.
Another option being considered by Government is to phase out completely unleaded petrol. If this is implemented, MTA service station members will face further disruption to their operations and infrastructure, with consumers forced to purchase the more expensive high octane fuel or move to E10.
MTA’s service station division Colin Long (SSA) is interviewed by Channel 9 news on the 22/12/16 on the issue.
