MTA NSW - Sunday Trading Hours Update

Following the initial results of the MTA NSW Sunday Trading Survey, there is a general consensus from many Motor Dealers across the Greater Sydney Metropolitan area who support lobbying for amendments to Sunday Trading Hours.

MTA NSW surveyed the Industry with results showing 81% of its Motor Dealer Members wanted to cease Sunday trading. Several resounding factors underpinned their response which varied from reduced margins, and increased costs that would make Sunday trading commercially non-viable. Moreover, the ongoing challenge Car Dealers face is to retain quality staff whilst enticing new candidates to the Automotive Sales sector due to 7-day trading. Additionally, there were negative perceptions regarding the impacts to ‘Work-life Balance’ for their employees.

In response to the survey conducted, MTA NSW wrote to the Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, The Hon. Kevin Anderson MP, seeking to review a potential amendment to Sunday Trading Hours for Motor Dealers.

The Minister has since responded, and has based his response on the Retail Trading Act 2008 (the Act). Under the Act, businesses in NSW have the flexibility to remain open or closed on unrestricted trading days, including Sundays. This means that if a Dealer finds Sunday trading is not viable for their business, they have the option of remaining closed on Sunday’s.

MTA NSW will continue to review all opportunities on this matter and encourage Members to provide feedback that could assist the ongoing dialogue with industry stakeholders.
